SYNOPSIS

The Phoenix tells the story of Ragnar and William, two teenagers who live on the edge of society and who have created an elaborate fantasy world to escape their daily hardships.  When Ragnar falls in love with Torvald, a handsome and popular student, she initiates a chain of events with tragic consequences.

Director Devin Brain, co-Artistic Director of the 2009-2010 Yale Cabaret and director of Yale Cabaret’s productions of Bones in the BasketPamela Precious,Orestes, and The Maids, describes the piece as a

a beautiful, double-edged story – it has all the grit of life and yet it is sustained by a golden ribbon of faith, of a belief in something magical: love or another world, it doesn’t matter.  That is a magic that means a lot to me – poetic faith.  It is also a magic that is the root of theater."

Using the original story as a jumping-off point, Brain and his company of actors will create a unique theatrical event, incorporating live music and puppetry to bring this heartbreaking romance to life.  Expect a bold, imaginative, and provocative night at the Summer Cabaret.
